Sweet sounds emanate from the orchestra–drums, strings, oboes, bassoons and brass fill the space with the sparkling noise of new music by 21-year-old Thomas Linley, Jr. The curtain rises again, this time to an ensemble of dancers ambling across the raked stage. It smells overwhelmingly of sulfur from explosions representing a fierce sea storm. It’s a chilly night in late December, 1777 at London’s Drury Lane theater at the premiere of the most popular eighteenth-century version of The Tempest. We’ll explore four centuries of music used for Shakespeare’s most musical play. From pipe & tabor to string orchestra, you’ll learn about tunes from The Tempest. Join us at Agecroft Hall & Gardens for this lecture with Sarah Schilling!
